Is the Wayfarer bag completely waterproof?

No. The 840D TPU fabric is waterproof and keeps out rain and sea spray, but the zips are not watertight when the bag is fully submerged. If you want to submerge a bag underwater, choose a waterproof bag with a roll-top closure.

Can you hide the shoulder straps when packing items in the hold?

The shoulder straps can be quickly detached or tucked away against the back panel. This prevents them from getting caught in airport baggage carousels if you choose to check it in.
