There are three main types of scuba diving suits: the wetsuit, the semi-dry suit, and the drysuit. Each has its own features, options, and details. The right choice of diving suit depends not only on the water temperature... but also on your personal sensitivity to cold. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced diver, choosing the right scuba diving suit is essential for a safe and enjoyable dive.
Which Thickness of Diving Suit Should You Choose? Your Expert Guide
This is one of the most frequently asked questions: What wetsuit thickness is best for diving? Should you go for a two-piece suit or a one-piece suit? The diving suit is the core of your diving gear.
It all depends, of course, on the water temperature and how you personally feel the cold as a diver. Here are some tips to help you decide, including guidance on each neoprene thickness.
For Warm Waters (25°C / 77°F and Above):
A shorty or a 3 mm full wetsuit will be sufficient. This suit protects against mild cold while allowing great freedom of movement—perfect for tropical dives. It's also ideal for snorkeling or swimming in warm water. A swimsuit alone won’t offer the same thermal protection. The 3 mm suit is a great option for these conditions. For those looking for lighter gear, we offer a range of shorty wetsuits, perfect for warm waters. Explore our 3 mm men's shorty, 5 mm men's shorty, or women’s shorty wetsuits, depending on your needs.
For Temperate Waters (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F):
Choose a 5 mm one-piece wetsuit. It provides a good balance between warmth and flexibility. If you tend to get cold easily or are planning longer dives, you can pair your wetsuit with a neoprene vest or underlayer for added thermal comfort without significantly increasing the weight of your gear. A 5 mm neoprene wetsuit is versatile and comfortable for divers.
For Colder Waters (15°C to 20°C / 59°F to 68°F):
The water is getting chilly. A 7 mm wetsuit is recommended. To stay warm without sacrificing mobility, you can also choose a mixed-thickness suit, with 7 mm on the torso to protect vital organs and 5 mm on the arms and legs. Adding a hood or thermal underlayer can also help you stay warmer and improve insulation. This is a key consideration for diving in cold waters—thermal protection is essential.
Different Types of Diving Suits: A Choice Tailored to Every Diver
Whether you’re scuba diving or freediving, diving suits come in various categories:
Wetsuit: The most common type of diving suit. Its principle: a thin layer of water is trapped between your skin and the neoprene, and your body quickly warms it up, creating natural insulation. For this thermal protection to work effectively, the suit must fit snugly. If it’s too loose, too much cold water will enter, and you’ll get cold quickly. Our wetsuits are known for their comfort and ease of use.
Semi-Dry Suit: A great compromise—less well-known, but very effective. It uses the same principle as the wetsuit but improves insulation with wrist and ankle seals and a waterproof back zipper that limits water entry. Ideal for waters between 10°C and 18°C (50°F to 64°F), it enhances your thermal comfort. It might require a bit of help to put on, but it remains accessible to all divers. If you're sensitive to cold, feel free to wear a thin underlayer for extra warmth. Semi-dry suits offer a balanced option for scuba diving.
Drysuit: Designed for cold, even very cold, waters. A drysuit completely prevents water entry. The trapped air inside, combined with a thermal underlayer, keeps you warm. Typically used in waters below 15°C (59°F), and even 10°C (50°F) for experienced divers, it requires some adaptation, especially in managing buoyancy due to the air inside. However, it allows you to dive comfortably in winter or extremely cold conditions. The diver must control suit inflation for proper buoyancy and safety. A drysuit is a must-have for cold-water diving.
All these diving suits come in different thicknesses—3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm—suitable for varying temperatures. They're made from materials like neoprene, canvas, or technical fabrics such as latex or silicone.
types and Styles of Diving Suits: Functionality and Design
There are various styles of suits to match your needs and the water temperature:
Full-Body Diving Suit (also called One-Piece Wetsuit):
Covers the entire body, including arms and legs. Ideal for cool to cold water dives where thermal protection is crucial. This one-piece suit provides comfort and improved sealing.
Sleeveless Diving Suit:
Lighter and allows greater freedom of movement in the arms. Suitable for warmer waters or for those who want extra comfort in summer dives.
Whether you prefer a suit with a built-in hood, a one-piece, or a two-piece configuration, there’s a suit to match your diving style and personal preference.
If you like to customize your setup, the two-piece suit will suit you: a diving jacket/top and diving pants/bottoms that you can mix and match depending on the water temperature and type of dive. A jacket can complete your gear for added protection.

Our Expert Tips for Choosing the Right Diving Suit
Every diver is different and feels the cold differently. It’s important to choose a suit that matches both the water temperature and your personal sensitivity to cold.
For your first dives, especially in a pool, a shorty will do just fine: it offers protection while allowing freedom of movement. It’s best to start with an affordable suit, learn what size fits you best, and then upgrade as your needs and budget evolve.
Fit is crucial. A suit that’s too large won't keep you warm—it’ll let in cold water. Too small, and it’ll be uncomfortable and restrict movement. Sizes vary by brand: Beuchat doesn’t fit the same way as Seac, Tecline, or Scubapro. To avoid surprises, refer to our brand-specific size guides. Easy donning with a zipper is important. Thermal protection depends heavily on proper sizing—a good fit means better comfort.
